DIY Basics

For the uninitiated, DIY stands for Do It Yourself, and the entire idea behind doing it yourself is to save on the high cost of professional labor. The only drawback is the old adage of "doing it right the first time". Without the basic skills, time and will to complete a project, you may be better off hiring a professional. But, for most of our projects, the size and scope is not so grand as to require a degree or mastery of any one skill.

You should have a basic knowledge of woodworking and be willing and able to try some things you may have never done before, like operating consumer grade power tools. Basic handling of a circular saw, jig saw and table saw are very helpful, however, many of our members have never touched one of these power tools, but they are willing to learn the tool safety and usage recommendation simply by reading the user manual that comes with the power tool.  Other tools required might be simple hand tools like hammer, screwdrivers and measuring devices.

Advanced builders will usually have move complex and powerful tool like pneumatic air nailers, power routers, joiners and planers. Electronic projects may require some basic soldering skills.

Mechanical projects are usually more complex and require not only a mechanical aptitude, but even more advanced tool like welders, air powered grinders and more. It is also possible that some projects require custom machined parts. We have a professional shop at your disposal for "one off" machined parts.

This site will give you the ideas and printable plans to build your desired project, but you must be willing to learn the use of all required tools to get 'er done.
